March 11, 2010It's one-and-done for the Blazer basketball team in the C-USA Tournament. UAB came out flat, fell behind by 14 points and lost to Southern Miss, 58-44, in the second round of the Tournament.
After receiving a first-round bye for their third-place finish, UAB faced the winner of the Southern Miss-Tulane game in the second round. After Southern Miss knocked off the Green Wave, the Blazers were barely a bump in the road for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 16-2 lead before six minutes were gone in the game, and it was essentially over. UAB finally got into the game, but the Golden Eagles still took 15-point, 31-17 lead at the end of the first half.
UAB used a 9-3 lead to open the second half, cutting the margin to single digits at 34-16. But they never got any closer. Southern Miss took control for the rest of the half.
Southern Miss had three players in double figures - Angelo Johnson (17), Gary Flowers (14) and R. L. Horton (12). Flowers grabbed 11 rebound to record a double-double for the game.
Jamarr Sanders was the only Blazer in double figures, and he barely made it with 10 points. Elijah Milsap led the efforts on the boards with eight rebounds.
UAB shot poorly from the field and the foul line. The Blazers managed to hit only 39 percent from the floor (18-of-46) and ever worse (27%, 4-for 15) from the charity stripe.
The loss kills UAB's chance for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. An NIT bid is still a possibility.
