January 28, 2012One look at the names on the ECU roster and fans knew the night might be trouble. Paul, Kemp and Sampson - fortunately it wasn't Chris, Shawn and Ralph - but for most of the night the Blazer's played like it might have been them. UAB started strong and finished strong - but the in between sank them as the Blazers fell 73-66 at Bartow Arena.
ECU was on fire all night long, shooting nearly 64% in the first half, 55% in the second half and nearly 60% for the night. UAB shot well - but not well enough hitting 50% for the night from the field as well as from behind the arc. ECU hit 58% of their trey attempts. ECU was 16-21 from the foul line and UAB sank all three of their foul shots. UAB outrebounded the Pirates 24-23.
Cameron Moore had another double-double with 13 rebounds and 14 points - most of his points coming late. Preston Purifoy led UAB with 17 points. Jekore Tyler pitched in 11 and Quincy Taylor had ten points and seven assists.
Darrius Morrow was dominant in the paint going 11-15 from the field for 24 points. He basically had his way with the Blazer defense. Miguel Paul notched 14, Erin Straughn 13 and Maurice 12 for the Pirates. Paul also dished out seven assists.
"We had no interest in playing," said UAB coach Mike Davis. "We had no energy or passion ..they did whatever they wanted. Maybe we need to get some new guys in here who want to play. We just don't have enough talent to get it done - but I don't care about talent - I care about effort and we didn't give it tonight."
The win was ECU's first in conference play. The Pirates are 1-6 in league play and 10-10 overall. UAB dropped to 2-5 in the league and 7-13 overall. The Blazers host Houston Wednesday night at Bartow Arena. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
