September 28, 2013UAB is 0-2 against the SEC this season after falling to Vanderbilt 52-24 in Nashville Saturday night. The Commodores rolled up 540 total yards and quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns to lead Vandy over UAB.
Vandy took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a 7-0 early lead. UAB closed the gap with a 33-yard field goal from Ty Long. The two teams then swapped field goals, giving Vandy a 13-6 lead, before the Commodores took control with two more touchdowns to put the game away.
Jerron Seymour led the Vandy ground game with 107 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Jordan Matthews had eight receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown. Jonathan Krause added four catches for 108 yards.
Jordan Howard anchored the UAB running game, tallying 92 yards on nine carries. Darrin Reaves was limited to 45 yards on 14 carries.
Jonathan Perry came on in relief of Austin Brown to complete nine of 16 passes for 155 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Brown completed 10 of 20 passes for 51 yards and also threw an interception. Darius Powell and Jamari Staples had the two touchdown receptions.
Jamarcus "J. J." Nelson led the Blazers' receivers with 69 yards on five receptions, all in the first half. An ankle injury kept him out of the second half.
The loss left UAB with an overall record of one win and three losses. The Blazers return to Legion Field next Saturday to host Florida Atlantic in a 2:00 game.
