Blazers Hold Off FAMU, 85-73
UAB fans hoped to start their Thanksgiving feasting with a little Rattler, Florida A&M style, Wednesday when they tipped off right after lunch. The Rattlers were a little tougher to chew than some might have hoped for - but in the end the Blazers were able to subdue the visitors and pull out an 85-73 win.
The game wasn't particularly close, there were only two lead changes and only two ties - but there were times the Blazers just weren't in sync.
"We got off to a slow start and we didn't play great defense," said Blazer point guard Chad Frazier. C.J. Washington chimed in his thoughts, "we didn't play as good as we wanted to, we missed a lot of lay-ups and at least 15 free throws."
UAB head coach Jerod Haase felt that way too, he said he was "a little frustrated at times, I don't think we played a great game. But we got a win and that's nice. Defensively I was a little frustrated but they have some great guards who can get to the basket."
The Blazers did not look bad; they just weren't at the best.
Washington led all scorers with 20 points followed by Frazier and Rod Rucker with 17 apiece and Robert Williams chipped in 14. Jamie Adams and Reggie Lewis led FAMU with 16 and 13 points each.
UAB again dominated the boards, outrebounding the Rattlers 49-34. The Blazers struggled from the foul line making only 29-49. FAMU had four different players foul out and the game ended with a fourth player carrying four fouls.
UAB's record improved to 5-2 on the season. The Blazers will now turn their attention to North Carolina who will visit Bartow Arena on Sunday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
