BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB junior safety Hiram Atwater has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week following his outstanding performance in last Thursday's 30-17 victory over Southern Miss.

Atwater had a huge game as he totaled a team-high 10 tackles, had a late interception for a touchdown that sealed the victory and came up with a fumble recovery that led to another Blazers' score.

Atwater picked off a pass by USM quarterback Austin Davis with 1:05 remaining and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown that stretched UAB's lead to 30-17 and clinched the win.

He also recovered a fumble at the USM 43-yard-line late in the third quarter to set up a touchdown drive that put UAB ahead, 17-10.

Atwater is currently tied for the team lead in tackles with 29 despite playing in only four of the Blazers' five games thus far. He leads the team in solo tackles with 18.
