The UAB football team practiced for nearly two hours on Wednesday in helmets and shoulder pads. The Blazers are continuing preparations for Saturday's crucial matchup at East Carolina.

The contest will pit two teams who are separated by one game in the Conference USA East Division. The Pirates (6-4) have a 5-1 record in league play and hold a one-game lead over three teams that are 4-2, including the Blazers (5-5).

"It was a good practice today," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "We were able to get a lot more work in on the East Carolina game plan. We did the competition against ourselves which helped set the tempo. It was a lot better."

Good things come to those who wait. Patience is a virtue. All in due time. We've heard these sayings and many more like them all our lives. While they are all true nobody likes to wait. When we have to wait - we wait impatiently. In recruiting the waiting game can work too ways - recruits waiting on the right offer - or the actual opportunity to present itself and for the schools sometimes it's a waiting game for them too - waiting for a yes from a recruit - or waiting for a recruit to arrive on campus. For one prospect and one school the wait is almost over.

It has almost gone without notice, but by winning the Battle for the Bones against Memphis last weekend, the UAB Blazers climbed even one more mountain.

The win did bring the Blazers back to .500 for the season and put them in contention to play for the Conference USA championship and a bowl bid if they keep winning. But there was something that has slipped by most people that I think may be the most important fact of all.

The Blazers have now climbed above .500 in one area - they have now won seven of their last 13 games. To teams that are used to winning, that doesn't sound like much but to UAB, it is a major sign that things are going in the right direction.

In three days of practice this week the Blazers have been forced to work out in three different locations due to heavy rains Tuesday.
