Bullard Leads UAB to a 5-1 Win over Marshall

Ben Bullard scattered five hits over nine innings to gain a 5-1, complete-game win over Marshall Saturday at Young Memorial Field. Bullard struck out seven and walked only one as he kept the Thundering Herd's offense off balance for the afternoon.

Ivan De Jesus opened the bottom of the first with a triple to right field, but was gunned down at home when he tried to score on an infield grounder by John Frost. Frost went on to score on an RBI single up the middle by Michael Busby. The Blazers then loaded the bases on walks and scored two more runs - one on a bases-loaded walk and another on a balk - to take an early 3-0 lead.

Marshall got on the board in the fourth. Nathan Gomez slapped a double down the right field line. He scored on a bloop single to center by Alfredo Brito to make the score 3-1.

UAB got the run back and more in the sixth. Coy Arrowood scored from third on a ground out by catcher Jacob Germany. Keith DePew followed with an RBI single to center that scored Patrick Palmeiro. UAB took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning.

Frost and Palmeiro were the offensive leaders for UAB with two hits each.

Alfredo Brito was the offensive leader for Marshall with two hits and their only RBI. Nathan Gomez also had a pair of hits and scored the team's only run. Mike Mason took the loss for Marshall, pitching 5.2 innings and was responsible for all five of UAB's runs.

The win tied the three game series at one win each for the two teams. Marshall's Brito hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie and give the Thundering Herd a 7-4 win in Friday night's series opener.

The win improved UAB's record to 15-9 for the season and 1-1 in Conference USA.
