Blazers Hold Spring's Second Scrimmage
The UAB Blazers held their second scrimmage of the spring and new coach Garrick McGee came away pleased with what he saw. "I thought we did a good job, we had a lot of passion, energy and enthusiasm out there today." McGee went on to say the Blazers have better players than people think.
Jonathan Perry led the way at quarterback connecting on 15 of 28 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Josh Greer hit on nine of 15 attempts for 206 yards and a touchdown and redshirt freshman Austin Brown was good on seven of 13 passes for 86 yards and a score. No Blazer quarterback threw an interception.
Nolan Smith grabbed four passes for 110 yards. J.J. Nelson also caught four for 108 yards and one score. Jackie Williams snagged six balls for 102 yards, Teddy Wright also grabbed four passes for 78 yards and a score, Freddie Moore pulled down two passes for 64 yards and a touchdown and Stephen Herring grabbed two passes for 12 yards and a score.
Bashr Coles was the game's leading rusher with 76 yards on ten carries. He was followed by Greg Franklin with 59 yards on eight carries both Coles and Franklin found the end zone once. Dontavius Jackson scored twice and had 40 yards on four attempts, D'Andre Mostella ground out 26 yards on nine carries and added a score. David Calloway had 20 yards on four carries and Nelson added 16 yards on one carry.
Leading the defense was Calvin Jones with nine tackles, Marvin Burdette had four tackles and two fumble recoveries. Lamar Johnson recorded seven tackles, a pass break up and a tackle behind the line. Jamie Onufrak had five tackles, including two for a loss.
UAB has three more practices to go this spring - they will wrap up next Saturday with their spring game at West field.
