McGee Lands His First Commitment

Garrick McGee picked up his first commitment as the UAB head football coach tonight. McGee who was hired on Monday has made at least two in home visits and extended at least three offers in less than a week on the job. McGee knows where the holes are and has moved quickly to fill the biggest needs on the Blazer's roster as they enter the home stretch for the 2012 signing class.

The Blazer's graduate four of five starting offensive linemen and must have a good signing class to avoid a huge hole up front next season. Justin Forehand, 6-5, 275 pound offensive lineman from Pelham High will call UAB home next season. Forehand had not heard from UAB for sometime prior to hearing from McGee and Tyson Helton.

"It just kind of happened out of the blue," Forehand said. "I walked into the fieldhouse Thursday morning and my coach told me UAB had called and offered, then they did a home visit on Thursday night and I committed tonight. It's really been rolling."

Apparently McGee liked what he saw from the Panther lineman's film. An offer and visit followed soon after McGee arrived. He offered and then showed up that night for the visit. "I called coach McGee and I told him I believe in him and I believe in UAB and I want to help put UAB football back on the map."

McGee made certain to let Forehand know he was his first commitment. "It's real exciting. When he did the in home visit I was really impressed and happy that he believed in me. I think it's the right fit, it just felt right."

Forehand had offers from Jacksonville State and North Alabama. He was also hearing from Auburn, Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee State.

The new head coach made quite an impression on Forehand. "He's awesome. I rally like him. I can tell he's going to be a player's coach. I'm looking forward to playing for him."

Forehand scored a 19 the first time he took his ACT and retook it on Saturday. He has a 3.0 GPA and plans on majoring in civil engineering at UAB.
