UAB Coasts Past Troy for Third Win in Basketball
BARTOW ARENA - C. J. Washington scored 25 points and grabbed ten rebounds to lead UAB to an 81-69 win over Troy at Bartow Arena Thursday night. Washington was one of four players in double figures for the second straight game as the Blazers overwhelmed the out-manned Trojans.
Rob Williams followed Washington in the scoring column with 12 points. Fahro Alihodzic and Chad Frazier added ten points each. Both Alihodzic and Frazier grabbed ten rebounds each to also record a double-double.
UAB jumped out to a quick 30-15 lead, but a series of turnovers - 14 in the first half - let Troy get back into the game. The Trojans closed the gap to 36-30 with 7:23 remaining in the first half. Washington scored 12 points in the first period as the Blazers settled for a 40-30 halftime lead.
Troy closed the gap to 42-35 with less than two minutes gone in the second half, but UAB soon took controlled. With 6:06 remaining in the game, the Blazers held a 68-57 lead. From there, the Blazers coasted to the 81-69 final score.
Kevin Thomas led Troy with 19 points. Hunter Williams added 14, while Wes Hinton also reached double figures with 11 points.
The only bad statistic for the Blazers were the 20 turnovers committed by the team. They made up for that by winning the rebounding game by a big margin - 53 to 24. "Every night should be a big rebounding night for us," Washington said after the game.
"We have a good team for rebounding," said coach Jerod Haase after the game. "We have good size and athleticism. As long as we emphasize it, we will be good at it."
UAB shot 50 percent for the game (30-of-60), while limiting Troy to 40.3% (19-of-72). The Blazers also won the game at the charity strip, sinking 16-of-17 while Troy hit only 4-of-10.
"We came out sluggish," Washington said. "On defense, we didn't play like we know we can."
UAB improved to 3-0 with the win. Troy dropped to 1-2 for the season. "I'm certainly pleased with three wins in seven days," Haase said.
UAB takes a week off before returning to action next Thursday November 21 when they take participate in the first round of the Charleston Classic. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN.
The Blazers return to Bartow Arena on Wednesday November 27 when they host Florida A&M in a 1:00 p.m. game.
