Can UAB Win Its Final Football Game?
The Blazers played well in the loss to Rice, but still lost. That leaves the team with a 2-9 record going into the final game with winless Southern Miss. Southern Miss needs a win to keep from having a winless season. UAB needs a win to match last year's record and to enter the off-season on a positive note. Who will prevail? UAB of course, is hoping it will be the Blazers.
"You want to win the last game and go into the off-season with momentum," coach Garrick McGee said Monday. "It means a lot to every program."
The players seem to agree. Senior quarterback Jonathan Perry said, "We haven't lost to these guys since I've been here. We take a tremendous amount of pride in that. We just want to continue that and go out on a great note."
Senior center Billy Autrey agreed. "I'm going to be a Blazer for life," he said. "I am going to bleed and Green and Gold. I want to win and carry some momentum into next season. We have never lost to Southern Miss as a senior class and we want to keep that streak going."
The danger, of course, is that UAB might take the winless Golden Eagles too much for granted. McGee doesn't think that will happen. "It doesn't mean anything to me," McGee said of the Eagles' record. "I am worried about this game. Every game is different. Just two years ago, they were the conference champions. We are going to prepare. When the ball is kicked off, nobody knows or cares about the records."
But both teams care about the rivalry, and McGee recognizes that. "It's definitely a rivalry," McGee said. "Last year, I didn't quite know because I hadn't been through the process of the game. At this point, we're not hiding. This is a rivalry. We are totally committed to the war that it's going to be. I am going to be charged up personally and I think our kids will be charged up as well."
Blazer fans hope so. A win in this game would be a positive start on next season.
