Southern Miss Demolishes UAB 62-27

UAB capped a disappointing football season by losing badly to the worst team in the nation. Southern Miss, who came into the game winless and carried a losing streak that included all of last season, surprised the Blazers with a second-half comeback that demolished UAB 62-27 and left the team with a 2-10 record for the season.

UAB took a 21-13 lead into halftime, but the Eagles held the Blazers scoreless in the third quarter while mounting an offensive assault of their own. A pair of UAB turnovers made the task easier for the Golden Eagles as they scored 35 unanswered points and 49 in the second half.

Southern Miss scored first, taking the opening kickoff and marching 75 yards for the touchdown. Quarterback Nick Mullins, a Birmingham native, threw a 3-yard pass to Tyre'oune Holmes for the score.

UAB responded with a 79-drive capped by a three-yard run for the touchdown run by Darrin Reaves. The big play was a 46-yard pass to Jamarcus Nelson on the first play of the drive

The Blazers scored again with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. The touchdown came on a 48-yard pass from Jonathan Perry to Nelson.

The Golden Eagles closed the gap with a 30-yard field goal from Corey Acosta early in the second quarter.. A UAB fumble set up the Eagles next score, a 25-yard field goal by Acosta that made the score 14-13.

Darius Powell claimed the next score for UAB, a 23-yard run on third down that gave UAB a 21-13 lead that stood for the half.

Southern Miss scored first in the second half. Mullins hit Dominique Sullivan on a 43-yard pass to close the score to 21-20. A UAB fumble - the Blazers' third turnover of the game, set up the Eagles next score - a 15-yard touchdown pass to James Cox that gave the Eagles a 27-21 lead.

UAB responded by fumbling the ensueing kickoff. That set up a one-yard plunge by xxx that gave Southern Miss a 34-21 lead with 8:13 remaining in the third quarter.

Make that 41-21. Southern Miss hit a 37-yard flea flicker pass to Marquise Ricard that capped an 88-yard drive.

Another touchdown early in the fourth quarter gave Southern Miss a 48-21 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

UAB closed the gap with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nelson. The two-point conversion failed and left the score 48-27 with 9:41 remaining in the season. Southern Miss simply added another touchdown with 7:09 to play.

Kendrick Hardy scored the final touchdown on a three-yard run with 10 seconds left in the game.

Jonathan Perry was the main offensive threat for UAB. He completed 18-of-31 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Perry threw one interception, fumbled once, and was sacked five times.

Darrin Reaves led the rushing game with 69 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries.

Kendrick Hardy led Southern Miss on the ground with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Mullins hit 24-of-39 passes for 370 yards and five touchdowns.
