Blazers' defense on the spot against LSU
The UAB football team spent over two hours on the practice field Wednesday as the Blazers continue preparations for Saturday's matchup against No. 9 LSU.
Following Wednesday's work, UAB defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson spoke with media. Johnson's defensive unit will have to contend with a strong and athletic LSU offense when the teams meet at Tiger Stadium.
According to the second-year defensive coordinator, the Blazers must first take care of what they can control.
"I think the biggest challenge for us is that we take care of ourselves, in terms of our effort, our execution, and how we prepare," Johnson said.
"That is the biggest challenge for us -- it is not what they do but how we prepare."
The Tigers come into Saturday's game after defeating 20th-ranked TCU, 37-27, last week. With that victory, LSU has now won 31-straight games when reaching the 30-point mark.
The Blazers' defense has plenty of experience with eight starters back from last year's team, and Johnson feels like his squad is headed in the right direction.
"We have a good team," Johnson said. "They are tremendous young men who work their butts off, they are super competitive -- those are positives.
"We know that once we settle down we have the ability to stop people. But, we have to learn how to play a complete game. You can't play for three quarters, so that is the big thing for us. First, we have to start fast, and secondly, we have to finish a game."
Saturday's kick off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
